Executive Function Coaching

The highest developmental stage human beings have been able to achieve is our ability to change our environment to suit our needs, sometimes too carelessly. Still, such capacity to be effective, efficient and productive is beyond any other species in the planet.

These achievements are the result of a series of functions and capabilities called: executive functions, which are governed, primarily, by the prefrontal cortex of the brain, which grows very slowly, from childhood on, but doesn’t finish maturation until the mid-twenties years of age. Such functions comprise: planning, organizing, emotional regulation and control, initiating and completing tasks, coordinating activities, suppressing and directing behaviors, and other related functions. These executive functions regulate performance from grammar school to high performance in organizations, such as: presidents, directors, and CEOs.

Part of Dr. Merizalde’s evaluation involves determining the adequacy of executive functions according to life activities and establish whether it is necessary to have a specific evaluation of these functions, what strategies could be helpful to develop the necessary functions or compensatory strategies to improve performance in whatever context.

Of course, to be able to help in this area, the person has to be willing to recognize, accept, and explore the particulars of the various elements and the factors which may be contributing to the limitations in the optimal performance, and be open to implement the necessary behaviors, activities and adjustments to reach the desired level of functioning, across the various domains in life.
