Know the danger and the symptoms and take immediate action.
You don’t have to live in a region with extremely cold temperatures to suffer from hypothermia or frostbite. Spending more than a few minutes outdoors…
• After getting soaked by rain, sleet, snow, or water in a lake or river
• If your circulation and/or ability to regulate body temperature are compromised by age (newborns and the elderly), alcohol or drug use, dehydration, diabetes, hypothyroidism, medications for depression and pain, inadequate nutrition, or smoking
• In sub-zero temperatures, especially if there is also a brisk wind
• When you are exhausted, which decreases your resistance to cold
• Without a warm coat, hat, gloves, footwear, and clothing deemed necessary to protect exposed skin
…puts you at risk.Symptoms of frostbite include
• Pale, waxy skin that turns (usually in succession) pale, pink, red, blue, gray, dark purple, or even black
• Tingling then numbness, especially in extremities and exposed skin
• Blistering of skinThe signs of hypothermia—when your body temperature drops dangerously low—are
• Cessation of shivering, in an effort to conserve energy
• Confusion
• Drowsiness
• Irregular heartbeat
• Lack of coordination
• Mental fog or memory loss
• Slow, shallow breathing
• Slurred speech
• Weak pulse
• Unconsciousness and death if left untreatedPrompt action is imperative.
• Get the person indoors or, if that is not possible, in a sheltered location out of the wind
• Remove wet clothing
• Dress in dry clothes or wrap in a dry blanket
• Slowly thaw frozen skin in cool water first then gradually switch to warm water—hot water and heating pads will burn skin
• Discourage use of frozen limbs (fingers, toes, arms, legs, etc.) to prevent further damage
• If conscious, encourage the sipping of warm beverages that do not contain alcohol but do contain carbohydrates or sugar
• Some homeopathic medicines that could be used in these cases to aid in recovery (since conventional approaches are limited)
